Rest in peace, Leonie

Former Eastern ward councillor, Leonie Gill has sadly passed away after a recent battle with illness. She was 65 and served Wellington for 15 years on Council.

A couple of weeks back I did a piece on Leonie’s service following her shock loss, which I think covers it, but Stuff have also talked to many of her colleagues and friends.

Council colleague Ray Ahipene-Mercer said Ms Gill had “made a significant contribution” to her community as a councillor.

“She rolled her sleeves up and got issues resolved for the people of Wellington, particularly in the eastern suburbs, which was her heartland,” said Mr Ahipene-Mercer.

Former mayor Kerry Prendergast said she had huge respect for Ms Gill’s integrity. “She never forgot her Labour Party roots and worked tirelessly for her community.”

“It’s really upsetting to lose one of your own. Her passing was honoured by the [Labour Party] conference,” said Paul Eagle.

Once again, thanks Leonie.
