Metropolitan city council polls are becoming our ‘mid-term’ elections

The people have spoken and the last two years may not have been the easy ride polls have indicated.  Some would argue that the city council local government polls are becoming our ‘mid-term’ elections.  Like President Obama and the Democrats are expecting in the United States, the incumbent party of government and associates were just delivered significant defeats in key areas.

With a Green victory in the Wellington mayoralty race, a Labour tinged one in the Auckland SuperCity, an ex-National MP getting the chop in Hamilton, New Plymouth voting in a former Labour Minister, and only good post earthquake management by Mayor Bob Parker averting a Jim Anderton win, is the tide starting to turn against the National Government?

Will there be a National Government Version 2.0 after these elections?  The results have obviously hit home.  With dissenting voices starting to appear, there may already be thinking going on about a post John Key environment. They are starting to call him the “Lone Ranger”.

“JOHN KEY is one of the country’s most popular prime ministers of all time, crossing the political divide, but sources within his National Party say there are concerns the public is beginning to perceive the party as a one-man band.”

But last time National rode with Tonto at the helm it was a massacre of Custers Last Stand proportions in 2002.
