PM John Key blames the postal vote system for the Wellington result.
“The Prime Minister says the postal ballot format for local body elections could be looked at as part of an upcoming constitutional review.”
“John Key says whether the current format for electing local government representatives is the right system could be part of the review.”
I suppose the more time you allow for voting the more leftie ‘low grade’ votes that come in, as argued by National Wellington Central candidate Stephen Franks in September 2010. He and Paul Henry should get together.
The previous utterances of Right-leaning thinkers have been to blame STV for the Wellington result, but unfortunately for that theory Auckland was a traditional FFP (First Past the Post) election, and former National Party Cabinet Minister John Banks still lost.
No worries for former National Party 1999 list candidate Kerry however, PM Key has a job lined up for her. GG?
Johnny, this post is misleading and inaccurate. The link you have provided DOES NOT back up your statement that “John Key blames postal vote system for the Wellington result”. Following the link provides this text
“The Prime Minister says the postal ballot format for local body elections could be looked at as part of an upcoming constitutional review.
The review is part of the Government’s confidence and supply agreement with the Maori Party.
John Key says whether the current format for electing local government representatives is the right system could be part of the review.
He says the terms of reference for the review are still being drawn up.”
There is no mention of the Wellington result. That isn’t surprising, because the story was published at 9.34pm on Tuesday 12 October – before Celia HAD EVEN WON THE MAYORALTY!
You also unfairly, lump an (out of context) quote from Stephen Franks with the PM’s views, without any evidence that the PM agress with him.
Nice try. John Banks was the first Nat to come out against postal voting in September 2010. He reckoned it disadvantaged ex pat overseas voters, who often vote more conservatively, and the alleged Manukau fraud. http://www.aucklandtrains.co.nz/2010/09/12/banks-wants-postal-voting-reviewed/. Another Right-winger Graeme Hunt, before he passed this mortal coil, also came out against because of alleged Left-wing fraud. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO1009/S00139/scrap-postal-voting-to-lift-turnout-and-end-fraud.ht. Somehow scrapping postal voting will increase turn out too. The clear implications of this and Key’s statement is that postal voting is favouring the left. Coupled with this is the fact that Key spoke a short time after David Farrar’s post that Kerry was a goner (7am on 12 Oct). http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2010/10/why_kerry_lost.html. The Radio NZ story was just a few hours later that morning, the 9.30pm tag denotes an updated time, not the posted time. Len Brown was old news by that stage. To argue that it was not obvious until 13 Oct defies gravity. Everyone with half a political brain knew the specials would go Celia’s way.
If you want to see how “well” FPP worked in Auckland, check out the spreadsheet I put together (at the link on my blog post about it – click on my name).
First past the Post is a pillow over the face of democracy in Auckland. It resulted in 62.48% of all votes returned for the Auckland Council electing no one at all.
In Albany Ward, the waste vote share was 80.85% (!!!!) of all votes returned. One of the two people ‘elected’ got less than 10% of all votes in Albany. The other barely more than 10%.
We have heard nothing about this travesty in the media…..but STV gets a hammering when a right-wing darling misses out.
Anyone else sick of our corrupt media?
Err, no. Because they are not corrupt. A bit crap sometimes, but not corrupt.
