Dom Post on the Mayoralty

The Dom Post have done a very comprehensive article on Wellington’s mayoral race.

First off, like any everyone else, they have called it a two horse race (earth to Bryan?).

Interestingly enough, here is what Kerry’s priority is…

She says the top issue facing Wellington is its looming fight for resources against not just the Auckland super-city but an earthquake-ravaged Christchurch.

Hrmm. Is this a rallying cry for a super city?

Again, Celia’s flagship policy of light rail to the airport is her first point of reference. They follow that up with Kerry’s response which seems entirely reasonable…

Ms Prendergast also supports light rail in principle but is waiting for a feasibility study, conducted by the New Zealand Transport Agency, Greater Wellington regional council and Wellington City Council, to be completed in 2013.

A feasibility study?! Quelle horreur!

And of course, the Dom Post have an online poll for the Mayoralty, have fun with that.

  1. You will notice that Bryan and friend are pumping up his vote in the Dompost poll by voting, restarting the browser and voting again. Does anyone want to point out that “real” voting doesn’t work that way … then again, they are happy and not posting vitriolic comments around the place.

  2. But the analysis does not explain which Mayoral candidate, Kerry or Celia, is doing the most for the War on Terror. I am serious. I am not joking and couldn’t believe this one myself. As funny as it sounds our Mayor is helping to send bombs to Iraq and Afghanistan. Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast and partner Rex Nicholls own 23 per cent of Surveylab. http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/42336. In 2008 Wellington technology company Surveylab teamed up with US arms engineering company SAIC to develop a new generation of its handheld GPS locators for the United States military. The US Army placed an initial $500,000 order.

SAIC are a neat company. http://www.saic.com/business/technologies/develop/national-security.html. As they say “Our forces [US] in the field need a weapon that can deliver on target with exacting precision.” Their weapon “Delivers high accuracy for today’s munitions”. Shame about wedding parties and checkpoints. But they reckon “Our engineers turn dumb munitions into smart ones. America’s arsenal required modernization to meet the challenges of warfare in urban environments.” That’s killing people in built up areas. “Fewer rounds needed to defeat the target will significantly reduce the logistics burden, or enable far more targets to be engaged with the current logistics capability.” This is great, Vote Kerry and get a free missile system. Kerry wants to make us an IT capital. An arms industry IT capital? Some people will do anything for money.

  3. I thought a feasibility study on light rail had already been done some time in the late 1990s …. but it didn’t result in any action because the councils buried it. So when Kerry says “feasibility study” I tend to hear “mechanism for doing nothing outside the election season”.

  4. If you want to know what Celia, Kerry and other mayoral and local body candidates think about transport issues, check out their responses to the Sustainable Wellington Region Transport questionnaire at http://bit.ly/9T09tu

The proposed Basin flyover, light rail/modern trams for Wellington, and the proposed Kapiti Expressway are among the hot issues.

  5. If Mayor Kerry Prendergast gets her way and uses her special relationships with Government Ministers like Transport Minister Steven Joyce, the flyover will go ahead. The only way to stop it wrecking cricket forever is to vote Celia or, when it is built, to use one of Kerry’s weapons systems to blow it up. http://www.ikegps.com/downloads/ikeMilitaryRecon.pdf. The US military has been Surveylab’s largest customer and is owned by the Mayor and her partner, who is also a director of the company. http://www.wellington.govt.nz/about/mayor/pdfs/conflict-of-interest.pdf.
