One Love is an annual festival, held at the Hataitai velodrome since 1998 on Waitangi Day, which also happens to be Bob Marley’s birthday. It’s organised by former student radio station – Radio Active – and while it’s been free in the past, in recent years it’s cost a minimal fee ($10 last year).
However due to changes in radio regulation the station has to change it’s frequency this year, and is planning on spending up to $100,000 to ensure that it’s listeners know about the change. This means that it doesn’t have the room in it’s budget to take the risk that One Love makes a loss.
So no One Love this year. The organisers are promising that it will be back next year – we certainly hope so. These sorts of festivals are exactly what makes living in Wellington so great.
